| His life in terms of the cross. The central meaning of the life of Jesus is not found in the living of his life but in the giving of it! We received a costly forgiveness. Isaiah 52.13 – 53.12 April 19 – Wiping the Slate Clean We cannot deny our sins; to redefine them as something else; to rationalize them; shifting blame to others; to repress them, drowning the accusing voice of conscience in busyness, distractions, or even chemicals. Scripture takes forgiveness seriously. Or God is a forgiving God, and we can live in the freedom of full, final and finished forgiveness. Romans 3.23 April 26 – Moving from Guilt to Gratitude Forgiveness is not a commodity, something we receive in some kind of religious transaction in exchange for our merit or our penance. It is a free gift of a gracious God that we receive through our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. One way to measure whether we have understood and received forgiveness is to observe the depth of our response to the Savior. Great forgiveness inspires great love. Luke 7.36-50 May 3 – Living in Forgiveness We do not often enough talk about spiritual intelligence, the consistent application of basic God-revealed spiritual principles to our lives. One of those key ideas is how people forgiven by the grace of the Lord Jesus live as forgiven people, experiencing the privilege of continuing fellowship with the Godhead! 1 John 1.5 – 2.2 May 10 – From Forgiven to Forgiving ‘Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely word until they have something to forgive.’ C. S. Lewis. Jesus obviously believed that forgiveness, both from God and from other people, is one of them most significant issues in human life. He talked about it directly and often, gave His life to make it possible, and taught His people that they were not only forgiven, they were also to be forgiving. Matthew 18.21-35 May 17 – Learning to Forgive What does forgiveness look like? Perhaps the most compressed, succinct statement about forgiveness found on the lips of Jesus is recorded in Luke 17.3-4. His words deserve careful attention and need to be read in the larger context of verses 1-10. Luke 17.1-10 May 24 – Forgiving or Forbearing? The Lord Jesus calls us to an entirely different way of relating to people, including those who annoy and harm us. One of the best passages to discover what this means deals with the concept of ‘the well-dressed Christian.’ Colossians 3.12-14 May 30 – When There’s No “I’m Sorry” We are all called and commanded to be forgiving people. That is hard under any conditions. But what if the offender does not, will not, or cannot repent? Matthew 18.15-20 June 7 – Rescued from Revenge It is easy to condemn revenge in the abstract. It is quite another matter to resist it in the real world. Often-times, the impulse to get even is overwhelmingly strong, usually cloaking itself as a desire for justice. But, as tempting as revenge is, our Savior calls His people to a lifestyle of forgiveness. 1 Samuel 25.1-13 June 14 – Bridge Under Repair Joseph was despised by his brothers, sold into slavery by them and lived a painful life because of their maliciousness toward him. Yet, he found in God’ s character the ability to forgive and love them again. Discover what Joseph learned about forgiveness, as well how to rebuild relationships that seemed hopelessly broken. Genesis 30 -50 June 21 – Good Grief Up till now we have focused on the forgiving side of the equation. Now we need to probe the nature of repentance and struggle with what it really involves. We will look at an intensely personal interaction of the apostle Paul with his friends in the church with which his relationship had proven to be most difficult. 2 Corinthians 7.8-13 June 28 – The Gift of Forgiveness Throughout this series we have celebrated one of the great truths of the Christian gospel: Our God is a forgiving God, who freely forgives those who trust in His Son. His forgiveness is a costly forgiveness, grounded in the death, burial and resurrection of His Son. Our goal in this final message is to review a second closely allied truth: As followers of Christ, forgiven people must be forgiving people. Ephesians 4.32 – 5.2 |
